Arcane Mythology
In the beginning, only Chaos existed, and the Elder Gods ruled
the universe.
But as time passed, new Gods came into existence. An epic struggle
followed, and the Elder Gods were stricken down, banished beyond
the frontiers of the universe, and condemned to roam the dark
and cold dimensions of the Uncreated for all eternity. Rage has
consumed these Great Ancients ever since. They have one obsession
to return to the universe from which they were exiled, and restore
the reign of Chaos.
Eons later a secret cult known as the Elder Star Society, lead
by the mysterious Cardinal, works to help the Ancients return
to this world and rule humanity.
But the Society did not expect three investigators of the supernatural
(Ophelia MacDermoth, Prescott Bridgeman and Gregor MacDermoth)
to stumble upon their plans.
The first confrontation took place at the Miller Estate in New
England, where the three heroes were duped into helping the enemy.
By defeating The Guardian, a dangerous native spirit who was terrorizing
the estate's inhabitants, they unknowingly activated one of the
nodal points that form magical triangles over the surface of the
Earth. This is exactly what the Cardinal wanted when three nodes
are activated, enough energy will be liberated by the gigantic
mechanism to let Elder Star achieve it’s dream of bringing the
Great Ancients back.
Arcane is inspired by the pulp serials of the 1920’s and H.P.
Lovecraft’s ‘Cthulhu Mythos.’
One of the most widely admired and imitated American authors of
all time, H. P. Lovecraft (1890 – 1937) used elements of many
literary styles to create his own unique brand of fiction. Fantasy,
horror and science fiction combined into what he termed ‘cosmic
horror.’
Lovecraft would often create elements, such as the god Cthulhu,
which he used in multiple stories. In doing so, Lovecraft not
only had fun with his in-jokes, but built up a consistent system
of lore for his readers.
Over time, this shared world became known as the ‘Cthulhu Mythos’
and was used by various authors to set their stories and use elements
from each others' work.
Arcane Characters
Ophelia MacDermoth
Ophelia MacDermoth is Dr. MacDermoth’s only daughter, a beautiful
and strong willed is a concert violinist in her early twenties.
Her dark and mysterious personality may be related to her psychic
‘gifts’, over which she has imperfect control. Her father believes
she gained these powers in the womb, when her mother was exposed
to the Great Ancients’ magic. Ophelia frequently experiences frightening
nightmares, and believes they will never stop until the Great
Ancients are banished from the Earth for all eternity.
Thanks to her psychic powers and keen mind, she is an equal partner
in her father and Prescott’s inquiries.
Dr. Gregor MacDermoth
Chairman of Southwick University’s Department of Anthropology,
63-year-old Dr. MacDermoth is a world-renowned specialist on ancient
Egypt and American Indian tribes.
Twenty-some years ago, he and his pregnant wife settled among
a tribe in the Congo whose warriors were devoted to the worship
of an unknown divinity named ‘Tulu’. During one of their magical
ceremonies, a terrifying creature appeared, driving Mrs. MacDermoth
permanently insane. After giving birth to Ophelia, she was interned
for the rest of her life.
Overcome with grief, MacDermoth decided to avenge his loss by
learning everything he could about the Great Ancients and the
ancestral magic associated with them. He has chased their worshippers
to all corners of the world and foiled plans to restore the Great
Ancients’ rule over Earth and humanity.
Prescott Bridgman
Prescott Bridgeman is a big, strong 29-year old engineer. An orphan
at a young age, he decided to learn about his roots and became
a genealogy buff. He discovered he was a direct descendant of
the Salem Witches’ executioner, and that a curse had been placed
on his family. A devout skeptic, he soon joined the American Association
for Psychic Research, with the goal of disproving any claims of
supernatural powers by anyone, anywhere.
With his homemade infrared photographic film, motion sensors and
other pseudo-scientific equipment, he has debunked several frauds
all over North America.
His inquiries led him to meet Dr. MacDermoth and his daughter
on several occasions. They soon started collaborating, and their
partnership became even stronger once they collided with seemingly
real manifestations of the Great Ancients, but he still maintains
a healthy dose of skepticism.
The Cardinal
The Cardinal is the mysterious leader of the Elder Star cult,
devoted to restoring the Great Ancients to power over the Earth.
Very little is known about him. Some say he’s a former Catholic
bishop, now over two hundred years old, who achieved a measure
of immortality by tapping into the Great Ancient’s mystical powers.
The extent of his magical powers is unknown, but he is undoubtedly
a dangerous man.
